Lady Macbeth’s metaphors are in relation to liquid. When Lady Macbeth is performing her soliloquy, she says “and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty … stop up the access and passage to remorse”. By saying it is “direst cruelty” she could be referring to poison, as women back then did not wield weapons, but instead used poison. This shows she has evil motives. Lady Macbeth describes her evil as a liquid so Shakespeare may mean her evil has similar properties to those of liquids. For example liquids can change state, evaporate and move slowly yet still have the ability to run away and loose control. This could mean that Lady Macbeth could develop like this over the course of the play. Her evil may start out slowly but begin to get out of control.
